My step-sister's family had a Christmas Eve tragedy and miracle yesterday. They live in Sitka, Alaska, where boating is your daily transportation, and hunting is your main source of food for the family. These are good, honest, and hardworking people.
Yesterday, on Christmas eve, their boat capsized off the coast of Alaska in freezing winter waters. They were in the freezing water for 45 minutes before being able to swim to shore on a remote island. There, they huddled together for warmth for 8 hours before Coast Guard was able to locate them. The miracle is that everyone survived with no injuries. The tragedy is that they lost everything to the sea. Their boat (daily transportation), their firearms (needed for food and protection from large predators), and all of their Christmas gifts.
This is a tough family to endure the way of life in rural Alaska. You can see in the news article below that they are just happy to be alive. They would not be the type to ever start one of these GoFundMe's, and I can't be sure if they would approve. Either way, 4 states away, watching my dad worry over his daughters family, there isn't much we can do besides financial support. I can't begin to estimate what they have lost, and I'm not even sure 10k would be close to it. Either way, it would be something to get them on their feet again. It seems like it could be obtainable amount between family, friends, and those just giving charity to a family in need this Christmas.
I'd like to make this goal by the end of the year, if not, then soon after to be able to start the new year a little better than this hell hole of a year, 2020, has been to them. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Saline Family.
