On May 18th the municipality of Salgar, Antioquia suffered one of the greatest and most painful tragedies in recent Colombian history. The Liboriana stream destroyed the lives and dreams of many small holder coffee producers and other inhabitants of La Margarita and El Mango villages. The landslide which was created due to heavy rains in the Plateado Mountain left as a result 96 people dead, 57 wounded, dozens missing and approximately 1,500 people affected.
Among the dead were 15 members of our Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) Sandra Milena Rincon's family. Also, one of our project´s coordinators Alejandro Gutierrez was dragged along with his wife and daughter by the strong current and was rescued kilometers down severely injured. His wife is still in an induced coma in a hospital in Medellin and he lost his young daughter who was just five years old.
The money we raise will go directly to Sandra and Alejandro to help them with losses they suffered as the result of this horrific landslide. The money will be collected by Jason Hahn, in Grameen Foundation's Seattle office, and then sent to Maria Adeleida Hernandez in Grameen Foundation's Colombia office to distribute to Sandra and Alejandro.
El 18 de Mayo se presentó una de las más grandes y dolorosas tragedias que el Municipio de Salgar-Antioquia ha tenido que vivir, la quebrada La Liboriana arrasó con la vida y los sueños de gran cantidad de persona que en su mayoría eran pequeños productores de café y habitantes de las veredas La Margarita y El Mango. A su paso dejó como resultado un numero de 96 muertos, 57 heridos, docenas de desaparecidos y 1.500 personas damnificadas.
Entre las víctimas se encuentran la familia de nuestra Líder Productora de proyecto “Cafeteros Conectados” Sandra Milena Rincón quien perdió a 15 miembros de su familia nuclear. De igual manera nuestro Coordinador Alejandro Gutierrez fue arrastrado junto con su esposa e hija por la fuerza de la corriente y rescatados kilómetros más abajo (heridos) pero con la desafortunada perdida de su hija de 5 años.

As part of the programs developed in Colombia, we have the Coffee Connected Program with Líderes Productores (Community Knowledge Workers) in Salgar, Antioquia with Salgar's Coffee Cooperative.
The Líder Productor is a key figure in the system of technical assistance provided to agricultural producers. The LP shares information and provides training with the objective of improving efficiency, productivity, profitability, and longevity of the community’s crops while ensuring that these benefits are shared with the community. Additionally, the LP is the individual charged with collecting information, which is important to the cooperative, associations and affiliated producers.
With the information they collect, “Farm Management Plans” (FMP) are designed for each producer, farm or business. The goal of the FMP is to both improve and reinforce productive activities or practices while tracking these improvements over time.
With support from the Grameen Foundation, the role of the LP in this process is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of producers in their community by providing resources, creating networks, and training them on technological tools which are both easy to access and use.
