Hello, My name is Saleh Abdurrahman (Sah-Ley, Ab-dur-rahh-man). I am an 18yr old freshman computer science major, born and raised in Baltimore, MD. 10yrs ago, my grandfather, Howard University alumni of the class of 1975, took me to his alma mater: the illustrious Howard University, the REAL HU. Everything, from the people I met and the allure of the campus to the food I ate, was transformative. From then on, I committed myself to attend Howard. Since then, I became my high school cohort's Vice-President, the Baltimore City Swim Club's team senior representative, and graduated in the top 10% of my class. On top of this, I received my Associate's degree and high school diploma from Bard High School Early College. Despite these numerous accolades, I have not been able to secure much outside funding.
I love my family and the support I have received from them thus far. However, this is a responsibility I wish to fulfill on my own. While I have been blessed to have almost half of my tuition covered by Howard, I still have a $5,000 balance on my account. I was only recently cleared for work-study and have not made nearly enough money to dent my outstanding balance. Even now, I risk losing my scholarship due to this balance.
This semester I have been focusing heavily on balancing financials, academics, and networking for the future. Right now, I am on track to completing my 1st semester with a 3.0 GPA. One of my long-term goals is to create programming for high school and college students that examines the various facets of STEM from a global perspective. This program would broaden horizons by introducing students to different cultural
and societal STEM-related advancements. It would also look into improvements from both traditional-western and non-western cultures. In addition, attendees would explore the socioeconomic history of STEM careers. The program would also provide internship opportunities/ work experiences for students interested in a range of careers.
After completing my undergraduate STEM degree, I intend to pursue Ph.D. studies. I hope to work in the STEM community and expand available STEM opportunities. This will hopefully ensure careers and opportunities are readily offered and explored by communities of color.
For me, going to HU is more than just a dream. It is a necessary step in gaining future connections and experiences. ALL donations will go directly to my balance for the Fall semester. Any leftover money will go directly to my balance for the spring semester. ANY and ALL donations are greatly appreciated! Thank you to anyone who may share this or contribute!
