Sailing Around the World Studying Plastics

Donation protected
My What and Why:

Recently, I received the privilege to join a crew of female researchers sailing around the world to collect and investigate the effects plastics have on our oceans and bodies. This comprehensive study is led by the London-based non-profit eXXpedition  and will be its second circumnavigation dedicated to this mission. I was selected as one of 14 women, from around the world, to be a crew member aboard the S.V. TravelEdge to sail from the Galapagos to Easter Island February 2020. As you all know, this mission combines the two things I am most passionate for: the ocean and saving our planet. This is an once in a lifetime opportunity that has the potential to disrupt the destructive path of our present and provide insightful solutions for the future. The money I raise will directly help cover the costs of ship maintenance, supplies, the professional sailing team onboard, and most importantly, the research costs that will extend beyond the voyage.

Benefits for Contributors:
In my community, I work tirelessly to educate the public on ways to eliminate plastic from daily life. My partner and I produced a short film about repurposing t-shirts into reusable bags. With this film and more projects to come, I hope to not only solve problems but incite fun along the way.

The textile industry is a major contributor of plastic pollutants into our environment and plastic bags never breakdown completely, leaching into our ecosystems undetected. To address these problems and help fund my experience on eXXpedition, I will make one reusable grocery bag out of a recycled t-shirt for every 30 dollars pledged to my campaign (for a total of three bags for donations over 100 dollars).

Your contributions will help a team of dedicated individuals improve the health of our planet while reducing your reliance on unsustainable and environmentally costly consumer products. Carrying this bag is an investment in the health of future generations and can help you become a more aware, conscious individual in your daily life. Together, we can beat micro plastics at its own game: using our micro actions as consumers to influence legislative action on a global, macro level. Each small, mindful choice can cultivate momentum for positive and meaningful change to reverberate throughout our social and political realms. Lets permeate our lives with positivity, not poison. Thank you for your interest and believing in a better future!

Please include the address where the reusable bags should be sent when completing contribution form.

Life Aboard:

It is no easy task living aboard a research vessel for three weeks. My duties include four hours each day of science research. This includes deploying manta trawls to collect plastics, bucket sampling, floating debris, separating biota from collected plastics, analyzing collection samples, and lectures from biologists onboard. I will be designated tasks cleaning and maintaining the ships galley and quarters. As crew members we are responsible for making all of our meals, rotating  watch and plotting our progress along the 2,000 mile journey.

My Commitment:

I am extremely grateful to be representing Key West, FL on this mission. My island community is disproportionately affected by single use plastics and is in desperate need of action-based solutions to protect the health of our above and below water communities. We can no longer stand by as our coastlines become piled with plastics and organisms, including ourselves, are slowly poisoned by the breakdown of these synthetics. Upon return, it is my goal to initiate educational programs that raise awareness and offer creative solutions to this issue.

Please follow along with my journey beginning February 15, 2020 on the eXXpedition blog.
