Our Sager
Update(2/2/22) on our boy from Betsey(Sage's Momma):
I’ve been debating on what to say and how to say it, but every time we have shared our story of the past 3 days we have been lifted up and felt so much love… so I am going to share so that our family and friends know what has been going on.
As you may have read Sage was experiencing some leg pain over this past weekend, and we accredited that to be growing pains, but something wasn’t sitting right in my mom-tuition. I noticed a strange rash all over his trunk, and decided on Monday it was time to call his pediatrician.
We were seen in the afternoon for a blood draw, and were immediately directed to downtown Blank Children's Hospital we went to the ER for more tests as Sage’s white blood count was very high (101,000) and platelets very low. For reference normal range for WBC is 5-10,000, so he was off the charts. We sat down with a hematologist/oncologist who delivered the worst news we have ever heard. We were admitted to the childrens oncology floor, and more tests ran to confirm his diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia-Type B.
Yesterday he had a port placed in his chest for ease of blood draws, and receiving treatments. He also had bone marrow and spinal tests done to determine best treatment for his specific cancer, as no two leukemia patients have the exact same cancer.
Today was the first chemotherapy treatment. Day 1 of 28… we’ve been told the first 28 will determine his course of treatment. We have opted to be a part of a clinical research and treatment plan above and beyond the standard care. We are hoping to get his pain managed, and levels to a better range so his body is receptive of the treatments. The staff at Blank has been so supportive and wonderful. We are taking this all one day at a time.
Thank you to all our family and friends who have been so supportive thus far. We are beginning a very long and difficult journey. We don’t expect to be able to do this alone and we are so appreciative of all of those who have gone before us and the help we have received so far.
