Everything changes in 12 weeks!! Our son Kenny, who has Autism AND Down syndrome, losses his Illinois state children’s residential home and funding!! (He turns 22yr and ages out of the program)
His physical safety is in jeopardy as he needs a home to live in with a fence and 24 hr supervision. We were able to provide both until he turned 16 and became too strong physically, with the mind and behaviors of a 3yr. older. As one of four children, I could no longer keep him safe from fleeing and self injuring behavior. He currently lives in a fabulous place with 6 other young guys who go to school and and live together with constant supervision. Unfortunately, on Dec 12th 2020, he can no longer live in this adolescent-placement. He MUST move.
For the past 2yrs we’ve worked, without success, with our local state agency to find him adult placement. Unfortunately, due to his challenging behaviors (He has self injurious behaviors when he is frustrated ...and that happens a lot because he is non verbal. He's an "elopement risk" too, cuz who doesn't want to run away sometimes! ) the state of Illinois has NO adult residential placement that will accept him.
He is so loved by so many, and I know if you meet him his smile would melt your heart. Wish we could talk to you personally, but please know your reading this means a lot to us all and your donation of any amount will be so appreciated! It’s crunch time for us!
The options are limited but boil down to this:
•He comes home (we will need a fence and more)
•He is accepted in an adult placement (the vast majority of which are not fenced from the street and we will need to provide one.)
• We buy a house for Kenny and 4+ other special needs young men and the state funds the staffing and management. (Overwhelming! And financially not possible without fundraising efforts like this )
The BOTTOM LINE: we seek to raise enough for installation of a fence AND perhaps raise enough to buy a place that gives him (and others) the independence to flourish with a group of his peers! Baby steps is how we’ve come so far.. moment by moment!
