Make Safe Births a Right, Not a Privilege

In Uganda, many women give birth without access to basic medical supplies. Even government health facilities and hospitals often require women to bring their own materials, called "Maama kits" (including things like gloves, gauze, blades etc…), and women are refused care if they do not have them. This lack of resources puts both mothers and newborns at risk of infection, complications, or even death.

While working in hospitals and rural health facilities, I learned from some amazing mothers (pictured above) and health professionals about the various “Maama kits” sold in pharmacies or occasionally distributed at referral hospitals. After seeing the kits, it quickly became apparent that not only were some kits costly, but none satisfied the WHO standards for a safe and clean delivery.

Determined to change this, the SafeEmbrace Project was founded, made up of both local Ugandans and Canadians. This non profit based out of Uganda is dedicated to sustainably decreasing the rates of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity, one delivery at a time.

To do this, the SafeStart Delivery Kit was created. This kit is a comprehensive, WHO-compliant, locally sourced bundle of essential birth items. Each kit includes:
