Hi, I’m Owen Riches. As a then 16-year-old A-Level student I started the government e-petition on safe standing. With the help of people like Jon Darch of the Safe Standing Roadshow, the Football Supporters Federation and fans from all over the country, the petition gained 112,000 signatures and has led to MPs agreeing to debate the introduction of safe standing areas on 25 June.
That’s been a great achievement, so thanks very much for your help. But we mustn’t sit on our laurels! Ahead of the debate I want to send out letters and information on safe standing to at least the 300+ Conservative MPs. On the day of the debate we will also be in London again to provide a base within the Palace of Westminster where MPs can get any further last-minute briefings on safe standing that they might feel they need and where, we hope, fans can meet their own MPs to urge them to speak in support of safe standing in the debate.
All this, of course, can’t be done for free. And while Jon and others have kindly agreed to underwrite the costs and I’ve been paying my train fares to London and back from my earnings from my weekend job at McDonald’s, I’d really appreciate your help in creating a ‘fighting fund’ to reimburse some of these expenses. Just the printing and mailing costs alone already add up to over £500.
Getting 112,000 fans to sign the petition was fantastic. If some of you now could also chip in a few quid to help with the ongoing expense of fighting this good fight, that would be a really big help too. The more we raise, the more we can do to make sure that MPs do now listen!
