We are a group of public school parents who have just had enough of having our childrens’ academic, social, and emotional needs ignored by the Teaneck Board of Education.
Since COVID hit in March 2020, our children have been denied access to in person learning. We have early learners and special education children whose IEPs and rights to a free and appropriate education have been wholly ignored. While private schools (mainstream and special ed) have opened their doors to students full time since September 2020 with an abundance of carefully considered precautions and protocols, the Teaneck Board of Education has refused to open its doors - not relying on science, medical experts or other objective criteria, but simply by the majority of the Board feeling that it is “not safe.” The Superintendent told the Board that the schools were ready to open last Monday, Nov 16th, and then the Board still voted to keep the schools closed and 100% virtual.
We are reaching out to the community and imploring you to help us pay for legal counsel to keep the Board accountable to their responsibility to Teaneck’s children who NEED to be in school and will choose to go. Many of the parents are already paying out of pocket for caretakers and services that they should not have to because of this unsustainable situation. Many are out of work and can not afford to fight this administrative nightmare. Kids are suffering mentally and emotionally, and we need YOUR help to be able to fundraise a legal fund to hold the Board accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
Any amount will cumulatively help us reach our goal. No amount is too small. We have to be a force to be reckoned with, and at the end of the day, that takes monetary resources. We have counsel ready to go, we just need to fund this fight.
Please help the child that cries every day because he can’t stand to be at a screen all day. And the child that has a hearing aid and simply cannot hear anything on the computer because it’s incompatible with his hearing device. The teenager that is isolated and alone at a formative moment in their social lives. The parent that simply, no matter how hard they try, cannot meet their children’s educational needs. And shouldn’t have to, because it’s the town’s responsibility to educate our children with the 65% of our property taxes that fund the schools. Please don’t let them get away with this travesty. Please help us. We can’t bear this alone anymore.
