Safe Transportation for a Black Trans Couple

My wife and I bought a used car this Spring, and it’s been giving us problems all year. Since getting this car in April (2021), we’ve had to deal with electrical fires/issues & a timing belt that we couldn’t afford to replace.

Three days ago, we hit a deer while driving to celebrate three of our loved ones birthdays. Thankfully, we are physically safe and unharmed. However, the vehicle we share is wrecked. Unfortunately we couldn’t afford insurance and our coverage has been lapsed.

We arrived safely at our destination. But our car is so damaged, that it isn’t worth fixing the body damage in addition to the necessary pre-existing work.

We hit a deer going 70 Mph on the interstate. There was an adult doe in the our lane & an 18-wheeler on our left. I couldn’t stop the cruise control in time to avoid hitting the deer entirely. It took out our left headlight, banged up the left side of the car, and left us with no functioning headlights (on either side). We had to spend extra money we didn’t have, to spend the night at a motel in a small Arkansas town we weren’t familiar with. We made it safely to our family…but now the car struggles to start. We are scrapping it to get enough $$ for a rental car, so we can make it home.

My wife is disabled and experiences daily chronic nerve and bodily pain that prevents her from working (we have been working with our care providers to get an official Dx so she could get proper accommodations, but this has been a long process we are still undergoing). We’ve been financially unstable since I lost my job early Pandemic. I have been working two jobs to support us, but I only make enough for us to scrape by. We don’t have good credit for an auto loan or enough money to make a down payment We rely on our vehicle to get to work, for doctors appointments, and for getting around safely.
