Safe Spaces for Black Women

51438342_1600963629456015_r.jpegOur project was created in May 2020 following the recent high profile cases of racial inequality and police brutality occurring during the COVID - 19 crisis that is still disproportionately impacting Black and other minority communities.

Many Black women feel traumatised and re-traumatised by these events and are left unable to sleep, concentrate on work and are exhausted from seeing people who look like them being mistreated, dehumanised and murdered. All of this was only exacerbated by the global pandemic that is devastating Black communities and increasing isolation.

Our idea was to create a safe space for Black women affected by Covid-19, racism, patriarchy and mental health where Black women can express and explore their experience in the world through virtual meet-ups with a qualified therapist providing support.  The sessions are free of charge and open to women from all over the world.

Within 24 hours of sending out our initial tweet we received over 4,000 requests.

Your donations will be used to ensure our vital work continues and is accessible free of cost to those that need it most.  We will use your donation to make sure we are able to pay therapists, facilitators and support staff while we continue to expand our services into a global network of Black women building wellbeing communities in countries across the world.

“A safe place for Black women was the medicine I didn’t know I needed. For me, this group came at a time when work was overwhelming and the world felt like it could implode at any given minute. Being a Black woman through this pandemic had me feeling low and lost. This support group gave me hope and filled me with love from women like myself. We shared, developed a bond and a sisterhood. I had a safe place to talk, listen, cry and also laugh and smile. The ladies really did create a beautiful space that was warm and inviting. For this, I am forever grateful.” - Hajjo, UK
