Safe Spaces for Black Women

Donation protected

Our Mission is to create a safe space for black women affected by Covid-19, the current political system, racism, patriarchy and mental health where black women can express and explore their experience in the world through virtual meetups with a qualified therapist providing support.

Following the recent high profile cases of racial inequality and police brutality, many black women feel traumatised and re-traumatised by these events. They are left unable to sleep, concentrate on work and are exhausted from seeing people who look like them being mistreated, dehumanised and murdered.

Within 24 hours of announcing our initiative, we received interest from over 4,000 black women all over the world interested in participating in an online session to discuss how recent high profile cases of racial inequality and police brutality occurring on top of a public health crisis disproportionately impacting BAME communities have impacted their mental health.

Key Objectives:

1. Weekly sessions online where black women can express and explore their experience in the world through virtual meetups with a qualified therapist providing support.

2. Creation of a space that supports and fosters collective healing and understanding in these unprecedented times

3. A growing network of Black women to knowledge share and support each other. Activities

Since June of 2020, we have run three weekly online sessions with over 500 participants from across the globe. Currently, we have over 500 women on our list seeking emotional support, and the list continues to grow each week. The sessions last approximately two hours and are guided by qualified mental health professionals. Participants register interest via a google document form. They are then sent an invitation to join a zoom link for one of the scheduled sessions after they have registered their interest.

Your donations will be used to ensure our vital work continues and is accessible free of cost to those that need it most. In addition, we will use your donation to make sure we can pay therapists, facilitators and support staff. At the same time, we continue to expand our services into a global network of Black women building wellbeing communities in countries worldwide.

“A safe place for Black women was the medicine I didn’t know I needed. For me, this group came when work was overwhelming, and the world felt like it could implode at any given minute. Being a Black woman through this pandemic had me feeling low and lost. The support group gave me hope and filled me with love from women like myself. We shared, developed a bond and a sisterhood. Finally, I had a safe place to talk, listen, cry and also laugh and smile. The ladies really did create a beautiful space that was warm and inviting. For this, I am forever grateful.” - Hajjo, UK.
