The Swift Parrot is a species in free fall.
Safe Nests for Swift Parrots seeks to salvage these beautiful birds from the brink of extinction by eliminating their most dire threat- predation by the introduced Krefft's Glider.
Current estimates place the population of Swifties at approximately ~600 birds. At the current rate of decline, that number is projected to reach zero by 2031.
Through a meticulously-crafted nest box design and a dedicated group of climbers/crew, this fundraiser will aid in the installation of 200 safe homes for swift parrot breeding pairs.
The box design directly excludes gliders from entering nests and feeding on vulnerable eggs and females, and also provides invaluable nesting hollows at a time of rampant native forest logging in Tasmania.
This is the third year of the project in Tassie, and 2025 is looking promising with many breeding sites and a better-than-ever nest box design.
The effects of this project are tangible, enduring and most urgently needed.
- Any funds donated are appreciated immensely and will be directed to box-building materials, climbing materials, and the team's travel within Tasmania.
- The project takes place between Melbourne and Tasmania, with the building of nest boxes occurring primarily in Elsternwick.
