Meet our Foster Dog Wynona
Wynona is an 8-month-old, female, American Pitbull Terrier mix. Winnie, Win, Nonni (she comes preloaded with nicknames) is a wonderful, sweet & affectionate young dog. She had a rough start; following the paperwork trail, it seems like she landed herself in a shelter in TN at about 3 months old and spent almost 3 months there before getting her freedom ride up to NYC. By no fault of her own, Wynona is now in her second foster home, and all of these changes are definitely impactful on a young dog's confidence! We’ve had Wynona for a month now, and we were hoping with decompression and at-home training, her anxiety would settle, but it’s still very much there and present.
Wynona has developed some anxiety around being left alone, maybe from all of the changes, maybe genetics (this type of anxiety is common in pitties), or maybe something that happened before she was in the system…if only she could talk.
Wynona panics when left alone in a wire crate and hurts herself trying to escape. We’ve also tried confining her to a room; she rather impressively scales 8 ft gates within minutes. At a loss, we tried leaving her free roaming in the apartment. She’s really great when we’re home, but when we disappear, her anxiety manifests as mouthiness, and she anxiously paces and chews on objects until we return. This is a super dangerous habit that we absolutely cannot allow.
We are working closely with Pupstarz to ensure Wynona has everything she needs to be healthy & happy, but what Wynona really needs is a safe crate to train in, one that won’t hurt her if she pushes against it, one that keeps her from getting into trouble around the house.
Our plan is to use positive reinforcement training in conjunction with an escape-proof crate to teach Winnie that the crate is a safe space and it won’t hurt her.
We would like to purchase a collapsible, escape-proof crate to use for Wynona. Collapsible so that it can be stored & passed around the rescue community to others who need it.
The model we would like to purchase in her size is $774. As Wynona's foster parents, we purchase her food, treats, etc., but this is out of the scope of our budget.
I’ve been bringing Wynona to work with me and waiting to run errands until my partner gets home. Both of which are unsustainable practices for Winnie & ourselves. There are going to be days & weather in which I can’t bring her to work with me and it’s really crucial she has a safe place to be. The sooner we can start her crate training, the less stressful it will be for her when we do have to leave.
If we don’t meet our fundraising goal quickly we will purchase a secondhand or alternate model and any remaining proceeds will purchase enrichment activities, food & supplies for Wynona or be donated to Pupstarz Rescue
Thank you for considering donating to Wynona's crate fund!
More about Wynona
Winnie is up to date on vaccines, spayed, housebroken (w/ a few accidents), good on the leash, knows basic obedience with a quickly growing list of learned cues. She is shy but friendly with strangers, good with other dogs although she’s not keen on on-leash greetings, chill with cats, relatively quiet (some play & alert barking), cuddly as can be, and overall just smart & empathetic—a pleasure to chill with.
She is 100% adoptable and would be so happy to go home to her perfect person or people!
