Safe and Happy Transition for Quentin and Lydia

Our parents need help. On Feb 3rd, our dad, Quentin, fell in his home after he became dizzy. Dad was taken by ambulance to the hospital where we discovered that his heart had been stalling for 7 to 9 seconds at a time, which is what caused the dizziness. Dad required a pacemaker, and a day later they repaired his fractured hip. He was then sent to a rehab facility for PT and OT on Feb 11th. Because of the pacemaker restricting use of the left arm, rehab has been painful, difficult, and slow. After 24 days in the rehab facility, an insurance decision was made that denied coverage for more time in the rehab facility. Unfortunately, this is the reality of how our seniors are mistreated every day in the United States. We appealed twice; doctors and therapists provided notes that stated he needed more time, yet he was still denied coverage. While waiting on the appeals, we were responsible for 2 days of private pay at $1000 a day. We brought dad home on March 9th, still unable to stand up from a sitting position without 2 people assisting.

Dad is thankfully slowly gaining strength and mobility with the help of in-home PT, OT, and nurse care. Our family has also been there daily to assist with both mom and dad’s needs. As some of you know, mom has dementia. This means neither of them are able to safely care for themselves or each other. We can’t be there 24/7, and it’s become clear that the house they have lived in for 55 years is not a safe place for them. Dad is still weak and fell twice again on Thursday. Fortunately, he was not injured. But with being on blood thinners for his heart issues, he bleeds easily and has developed many skin tears that need daily care.

With heavy hearts, our family has made the decision to move our parents into assisted living. Our parents are proud, humble people that have worked hard their entire lives, raising 4 children and caring for a daughter that had a rare, terminal disease, never asking for anything from anyone. Because mom and dad have no savings and live on social security, the house that they built and lived in since 1971 will need to be sold. We have found a wonderful, welcoming assisted living facility that has an available apartment, but mom and dad do not have the funds that are required to move in. While we wish we could take our time with this move, every day is a gamble with their safety.

We have put a deposit on the apartment for 2 weeks, will be applying for Medicaid, and are looking into selling the house, but all of that takes time. We are asking for help during this transition period. This is emotionally, physically, and financially difficult for our entire family, but mostly for our parents. We just want them to be safe, happy, and have quality of life.

Until we get the house sold, we are hoping to raise enough money to cover the two days of private pay at the rehab facility, at least a month at the assisted living facility, which is $7500, and some moving expenses. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to share our GoFundMe page.
