Hello! My name is Teddy, and I am a senior undergraduate student at Syracuse University, in the school of Visual and Performing Arts. This semester marks the takeoff of the high intensity production timeline for all students working on their senior capstone project.
Sadie Isn't Here is a psychological drama about a college student who struggles to connect with reality as she clings to childhood comforts through the puppet shows she performs. When a new artistic peer is brought into her world, the safe balance Sadie made for herself starts to wobble.
This film is inspired by a very personal experience and feeling. Many people feel grief for the loss of their childhood, even when said childhood was confusing or complicated, and I am no outlier. Struggling with mental illness has often left me yearning for the easier parts of childhood again as an adult, despite experiencing similar symptoms in adolescence. It is not a rational way of thinking, but during and after my attendance in a partial hospitalization program, I became fixated on the idea of actually going back in time and staying in childhood forever. I was unable to comprehend that I had even made it past the age of 21, and out of fear and terror for the future, clung to magical thinking and felt like I lived in a world inside my own head.
From that experience, Sadie came to be; a college student who is afraid of the future, and who's biggest wish is impossible. For all her faults, more than anything, I want her to learn to move forward, in the way that I am still learning every day.
In a little under a month, my film will be shot, and I appreciate every little bit of support I get!
