We, the friends of the Flores family are heartbroken. We lived through the slow and painful death of Veronica, who died at 37 from Huntington's. She was a single mother to 5 children. Her youngest was only 5 years old when she died, and Tomi was only 11. Now we have learned that Tomi is suffering from Juvenile Huntington's and will only have a few years to live.
Veronica's 70 year-old mother was left with the children. This is the second time, because Veronica's father died from Huntington's when he was 38 and left his 4 children alone with Veronica's mother. They are a poor family that live in a small town in Chile called Taltal. Veronica's mother is too old too work and the children are too young, so they live off of government assistance and a small amount that their uncle is able to give them.
There is no money for Tomi's care, so we the friends of Veronica's family are trying to raise money to help them out.
For anyone that doesn't know, Huntington's disease is a progressive brain disorder caused by a single defective gene. This defect is "dominant," meaning that anyone who inherits it from a parent with Huntington's will eventually develop the disease. Juvenile Huntington disease (HD) is a less common, early-onset form of Huntington disease that begins in childhood or adolescence. Tomi will continue to lose his motor skills, speech and cognitive abilities until he enters a vegetative state just prior to death.
Tomi had big plans for his life. He wanted to be a rapper! He wanted to go to technical school. He wanted to travel and visit his uncle in Canada. We are heartbroken that these dreams will not happen for him and that we will be planning his death before he even got a chance to live.

Nosotros, los amigos de la familia Flores, estamos desconsolados. Vivimos la lenta y dolorosa muerte de Verónica, que murió a los 37 años de Huntington. Fue madre soltera de 5 hijos.
