After 24 years as a direct action trainer & practitioner/ movement strategist it's time to take a break and go on sabbatical!
Earlier this year, in keeping with our values and methodology, Ruckus embarked on a journey to transform ourselves and find our most effective place in our movement. We found that place in service of black leadership, particularly as a project of the BlackOut collective.
With that, after 11 years as a staff of Ruckus, I left my paid position as Executive-Director to make way for and support new leadership.
There have been so many rewards to my work as an action practitioner & movement strategist. I have had the honor of working along side of powerful people and communities and have trained thousands (24 years as a trainer y'all) of people to take action. I have been constantly inspired by the ferocity and bravery I've witnessed on the streets and in community.
But burnout and exhaustion- that's real too- and so I am taking this opportunity to give back to myself and show myself the love I have given to my community for so long. My goal is to take as real a break as I possibly can until the end of the year.
If you've known Ruckus, you've known us to be chronically underfunded and underpaid. In the course of my work at Ruckus, I took more pay cuts than I can count in service of the work our community needed from us. In the end it meant Ruckus could not provide me sabbatical funds or a proper severance package.
So, today I am calling on YOU, my community to support me in taking the sabbatical I deserve. I am calling in all the love I have given for so long and I am giving it back to myself. If you have ever benefitted from the work of Ruckus, or from a fierce ass brown woman and mother like myself- please give.
Thanks Family
