After nearly 30 years in ministry, I am finally taking my first sabbatical—a chance to step away from the daily rhythm of sermons, worship, newsletters, and meetings. This time is about more than just rest; it’s an opportunity to reconnect with my creative spirit and pursue projects that have been on my heart for years. For the past two years, I’ve been dreaming about writing a book, and for the past decade, I’ve carried songs that are ready to be recorded and shared.
My sabbatical will also include a trip to the Wild Goose Festival, where I hope to connect with like-minded people and deepen my understanding of progressive ideas. The book I’m working on, “7 Trail Blazes for a Church in the Wilderness,” isn’t a how-to guide for building a successful church. Instead, it’s a collection of reflections and ideas for digging deeper as the world changes rapidly and the church must adapt. I want to explore the original messages of faith—those that may have been shaped by Western Civilization into institution rather than love—and consider new ideas that haven’t been contemplated in early Christianity or our church today.
The funds raised will help cover the costs of studio time and musicians for recording, airfare, car rental, Airbnb, and event tickets for the trip, as well as everyday essentials like lattes and “brain food” to fuel my writing and creativity. I have about nine songs in my repertoire, with one that needs a touch-up and another that’s still forming. These songs can be used in worship and shared with other churches and gatherings. Your support will help make this sabbatical possible and allow me to bring these creative projects to life. Thank you for considering a contribution and for being part of this journey with me.
