Dear friends and family,
It has been a wonderful three years at CSULB. I have had enjoyed many opportunities singing with the top choral ensemble as well as the Opera Institute during my time here. In my quest to experience as much of the world as possible, it is with great excitement that I inform you all that I have been accepted to the CSULB Study Abroad program for Fall 2017! In September I will be traveling to Florence, Italy, where I will attend classes, work as an intern, and immerse myself in Italian culture for four months.
Both my vocal performance major and Italian minor have prepared me for this program. I have already taken five Italian classes for my minor, which have taught me not only the grammar and vocabulary necessary to thrive in an immersive environment, but also aspects of culture, like specific holidays, etiquette, and even hand gestures. My major in vocal performance has equipped me with extensive knowledge of Italian history, thanks to the multiple music history classes.
By participating in this program, I hope to gain more fluency as an Italian speaker, as well as experience the birthplace of opera, the art form that has become my passion and career. To do that, I need your help getting there!
I have received a $1,000 study abroad scholarship from the CSULB Italian department. However, this only covers 1/8 of the cost of the program itself. I am asking for your assistance in paying for half of the program fees, which include housing, airfare, internship placement, insurance fees, and guided tours and overnight visits to some of the most culturally and historically significant places in all of Italy. If I exceed my goal I may also be able to afford private lessons with an Italian voice teacher, which would be a dream come true!
Please know that I deeply appreciate whatever you are able to give at this time. I cherish the support of my friends and family, and look forward to sending you all postcards from Florence!
