Make Micah's Mission Possible

Donation protected
On March 23, 2011 Micah was diagnosed with a very aggressive blood cancer, lymphoblastic lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin's . Micah was completing his senior year in high school when he was diagnosed and admitted to the hospital.  He was unable to attend prom and participate in graduation. Micah spent the remainder of 2011 in the hospital in San Antonio receiving chemo for his cancer with Brief breaks at home to build his immune system as a result of neutropenia. He was released and his care was transferred to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston in order to attend college directly across the street at Rice University. Aware of entering college later than his class of 2011, Micah rejected the medical recommendation of a lighter class load and enrolled in 18 hours each semester with a major of BioChemistry with a minor in Cell Division with ongoing Chemo. Due to his need for continued Chemo and an uplifting of his spirits as he battled cancer, attending Rice University although unplanned was necessary with its close proximity to the Texas Medical Center. Attending Rice met his medical, academic  and his emotional needs. Unfortunately this placed a financial strain on our family as his college and medical school savings were wiped out within two years of his tuition at a cost of $56,000 a year. Micah qualified for minimal financial aid and Rice offered limited scholarships to its students. Due to his cancer at an early age, Micah was unable to work and was placed in Rice's accessibility dorm room(where he remains today) to avoid crowds due to his weaken immune system and vaccination exemption secondary to cancer treatment. The family drove down once monthly for his Chemo which included a lumbar puncture using a size 90 mm spinal needle inserted in the interspinous space to kill any cancer cells in his spinal fluid which left him flat on his back after each treatment. The Chemo caused him to miss several class assignments and quizzes but his determination to attend medical school and become a doctor has kept him on track for keeping up with his classes. We are very proud of Micah and his achievements before and after his "stupid cancer".  His older brother finished college locally 2 semesters prior to Micah's enrollment at Rice. Micah remains under the care of Texas Children's hospital where he also volunteers to bring smiles to the children that are suffering as he did from a catastrophic illness. Micah has spent his last two Spring Breaks as a leader in "ASB" (Alternative Spring Break) volunteering at medical and institutional facilities for individuals suffering from catastrophic illnesses and/or the Special Needs population. Micah is completing his  junior year at Rice University and has scored above the National average on his MCAT and dreams of attending John Hopkins University medical school in the fall 2016. This GoFundMe campaign is to help raise funds for his medical school tuition. Please help us make his dreams of becoming a doctor possible by your generous support as he continues to kick cancer's butt!
