Hello everyone,
Coco is a 2-year-old male cat (previously feral) that I'm caring for. Myself and two other neighbors were feeding Coco, but I've been the one providing him with any necessary medical care.
Coco disappeared for a two-week period, and when he finally showed up again, I barely recognized him. He had a wound on his leg and looked sickly -- his skin was yellow and he lost a lot of weight.
Coco when she showed up ill:
I brought him inside and took him to the vet. He was jaundiced, tested positive for a tick-borne illness, and was diagnosed with IMHA (hemolytic anemia). He was wasting away. He spent several months on antibiotics and steroids until he finally tested negative. I thought things were finally looking up and that he'd need a few weeks to get back to his old self, but unfortunately, that didn't happen. He did not get better.
Coco was subsequently diagnosed with diabetes (likely because of the prolonged steroid use). It's been rough, but after starting insulin (with some dosage changes and a switch to a new insulin), his health has improved. He's doing better but still has a long way to go as he has persistent dental problems and his blood glucose levels are still high.
Coco now:
The issue is that I've spent about $4000 on his vet bills alone and about $2000 on things he needed outside of that (wet food, litter, compounded medicine, flea and tick prevention, insulin, insulin needles, glucose monitor test strips, etc.). I’ve had several major unavoidable expenses the last few months and also have two cats of my own that I'm responsible for. It has reached the point that I am no longer able to handle his vet bills on my own.
I’m asking for help covering Coco’s vet bills, mainly:
- Follow-up testing for diabetes (glucose curves and fructosamine tests)

Below is a past receipt showing how much a fructosamine test cost. He's getting this every 4-6 weeks until his blood glucose is normalized.
- His neuter surgery. The plan was to get him neutered at a low-cost clinic, but because of his diabetes, that's no longer an option. He needs specialized care during surgery, making the procedure more complex and costly.
- Dental cleaning/extraction. He needs a deep cleaning and possibly to have several tooth extractions. Even pate is hard for him to eat. I'm currently blending all his food. This is a complication from his previously undiagnosed and untreated diabetes.
Below is an estimate from the vet for both his neuter surgery and dental cleaning. I had to split it into two images.
Any excess funds will go towards Coco's daily needs as well as future medical care:
- Wet food (Fancy Feast Beef Pate)
- Insulin and supplies (insulin, insulin needles, test strips, lancets)
- Any follow-up appointments and procedures/surgeries
Coco is an amazing cat. He's affectionate, full of personality, and can live a rich and happy life if his diabetes is managed. He's only two years old and has many more years ahead of him!
