Dear Family and Friends,
As you know, Matthew has had many health obstacles during the last couple of years. First he had large ulcers on both heels. These became infected – one healed and one resulted in an amputation below his knee. Matt was able to adjust to his new circumstances with a positive attitude and looked forward to being fitted for his prosthesis. After only a month of using the prosthesis, it caused a new large ulcer underneath his knee, which became infected and resulted in yet another surgery.
Matt was working full time except when he needed to go to doctor appointments, which turned out to be several times a week. The company he worked for decided they needed a full-time employee and let Matt go. In their defense, I will say they had been kind and patient throughout this process. So now he has no job and lots of doctor appointments.
Since Matt is no longer able to use his prosthesis, he spends his entire day in the wheelchair. His current chair is a well-used rental. It weighs 40+ lbs. and is big and bulky. The process Matt uses to get himself to his doctor’s appointments is lengthy, inconvenient, and really not safe. As the prognosis for him to use a new prosthetic sometime in the future is uncertain, getting a more practical, safer chair is crucial for him to remain independent.
The chair on his wish list is a Ti Lite, model ZRA http://www.tilite.com. This chair will be customized to his body, removing the stress for improper posture while sitting. Some of the features include: the wheels are removable, the chair is foldable and easily moved from the ground to car by himself, safely. This chair will last him a lifetime.
