On January 5th, 2019, at the age of 3, Scarlett was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare and extremely dangerous type of childhood cancer. The diagnosis showed a large mass in her abdomen which was wrapped around her aorta. The initial scans also showed that the cancer had already metastasized to her bones in both of her legs and pelvis. The initial prognosis was not in her favor, and an aggressive treatment plan was quickly put into action.
Since that date, Scarlett has endured numerous rounds of chemotherapy, two cycles of stem cell transplant, radiation therapy, and multiple invasive and painful surgeries. She has taken countless different oral medications and shots, and has had a wide range of other treatments along the way.
As of June, 2020, the cancer is not yet gone. We are still hoping for the day when we may see a ‘clear’ scan, also known as NED (no evidence of disease). Seeing a clear scan is the primary goal, but even that is only part of the journey, as there is still a risk of relapse for many years after.
For additional up-to-date details about her full story, we encourage you to visit our Caring Bridge webpage at the link below. Here you will find detailed journal entries and photos describing everything she’s been through so far.
