I love hearing people's stories. Stories are living memories that instantly connect us to the lives of those around us, whether we've known them for years and are reliving the moment together, or whether they're total strangers and our lives are connecting for the very first time.
Some of my favorite stories to hear are birth stories. Many women share these moments on blogs, through film, or in person, and as they express each heartfelt detail, I can't help but stand in awe of the way God decided to bring new life into theworld.
But birth is not a beautiful memory for many women in the world. Of all the 287,000 childbirth-related deaths that happen each year, 99% of them occur in developing nations. (World Health Organization .) In these countries, there is often very little birth education and care available for expectant mothers.
Even in the US, pregnancy and birth have taken on stigmas that leave mothers with a bad taste in their mouths. Though there is plenty of intervention available, intervention often turns into interference, and mothers are forced to hurry their way through a numbing, disconnected birth story.
I want to change these stories, one mama at a time. Thus, I am on my way to becoming a missionary midwife! I'm studying with the GoMidwife program hosted by the University of the Nations in Kona, Hawaii. Training is 6 months, followed by either a clinical outreach to Togo and/or Uganda, or a 2 year apprenticeship here in the States.
The $8,000 covers tuition, room and board, and transportation for 6 months of training here on the YWAM base. If you'd like to be a part of this adventure, one-time or monthly support of any amount is greatly appreciated.
I'll keep you updated on those stories.
Thank you!
