Pat O’Brien Celebration of Life Fund
Donation protected
In July of 2022, Pat was skiing on the Nisqually Glacier and teaching low angle ice, and french technique to his beloved Washington Alpine Club (WAC) students. 4 1/2 months later he lost his short but fierce battle with brain cancer.
Pat had a zest for life and energy unmatched by few. His bright eyes and huge smile would light up a room and when he laughed, which was often and it could be heard echoing through the Cascade mountains, which he called home. Pat spent over 35 years deeply involved in the WAC where he served on the board of directors and as
chairman of the climbing class for more years than we can count.
Pat was an accomplished climber, having submitted Washington’s 100 highest peaks, some of them including Mt Rainier more than once.
His passion for the mountains inspired countless people who were lucky enough to call him their teacher, mentor or climbing partner. Pat gave selflessly and enthusiastically of himself but did not realize the deep impact he had on his community until after his diagnosis when hundreds of people joined his Caring Bridge site in order to help with rides to treatment, meal delivery and anything else that was needed.
Pat inspired so many people, not only in the way he lived his life but in how he approached his illness. Never giving up, always looking to make the best of any situation, tackling challenges head-on and with the most incredibly positive attitude. He has left a huge, gaping hole and is deeply missed.
Pat's never been about the money but it turns out that dying is expensive. What would Pat want for his memorial service? For sure he'd want to be there. Let's help cover the cost so this is one less thing that his family needs to handle and so they can focus on planning a celebration of life to honor and match the magnitude of Pat's impact on his community. Thank you for your generosity and support.
