Help Kenny Beat Breast Cancer

Donation protected
Hello, we the old schoolmates of Kehinde, also known as Kenny, are helping raise funds for a classmate in high school/secondary school (Federal Government Girls' College, Akure. Ondo State, Nigeria).

Kehinde is a mum of 2, living in Nigeria with diagnosed stage1 breast cancer. She’s undergone a mastectomy but needs 9m Naira (around £19,000 or USD25,000) for chemotherapy, radiation therapy and target therapy.

Living in Nigeria means Kenny battles alienation and stigmatization from friends and family who do not believe in medical science.

If you would like to know more about Kenny’s story, please keep reading.

Kenny’s Story.

In October 2019, I discovered a lump in my right breast that was continuously and rapidly growing,  I was terrified as any woman who has ever heard of breast cancer would be. I went to the hospital, a Lumpectomy and Histology were carried out, the test results showed I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma: Grade 3.

I was transferred to an Oncologist, on his advice, I underwent surgery in December 2019 to have the infected breast removed to lower the risk of the cancerous cells spreading anywhere else, as it was still at Stage 1 at that moment.

The surgery was successful, but the Oncologist described this type of cancer (HER2) as “aggressive” still with some chance of metastasizing.

The effect on cancer in my life is indescribable. The word “aggressive” and “metastasize” keep me up all night. The psychological and emotional torture is unbearable.

I now have 1 breast, where I used to have 2; I feel like half of a woman, but I do not complain. Life is unfair and I will learn to work on myself and make do.

The condemnation I have faced as a result of this illness, however, is harder to deal with.

This is because many of my friends and family think it is idiotic to trust in a medical doctor for healing, they believe that Nigerian native doctors and pastors are better healers, through prayers, herbs and potions. This belief has left me estranged and isolated from many of the people I would normally rely on for support in this very challenging time.

Government-funded hospitals in Nigeria aren’t very reliable, consequently, paying for my health care privately was the better option: what was left of my family and friends and church members helped raise the funds for all the treatments I have had so far. I am so grateful to each and every one of them.

On the 3rd of March, I was informed I have to undergo chemotherapy, radiation and target therapy as soon as possible, the quote for the treatment was 9million Naira (Nigeria’s currency), this cost does not include any additional laboratory tests to be carried out. Lab tests can cost an additional 500,000 Naira (£1000 or 1400 USD).

This is why I am asking for your help.

Being able to raise this fund will mean I can get the necessary treatments that I need, I can get better and I can be a mum to my 2 beautiful kids again. It means I get the chance to live, it means I can start to rebuild my life with my family.

Please, give whatever you can and share this gofundme page with as many people as you can. My life depends on it, my family depends on it.

Thank you.

Kenny.
