My most recent struggles are life threatening. I have a severe lung infection in my right lung, it is a superbug called Mycobacterium Abscessus and it is among the superbugs that are extremely resistant to antibiotics. I have been on antibiotics for about a year and have been in and out of the hospital 6 times. I finally have found a medical team that can help me, however the medical team is in Denver Colorado and I live in Southern California. The plan for me to finally be able to move on with my life requires surgery and I will be required to stay in Denver for 5 to 7 weeks. The financial struggle this puts on my family is huge, not just the medical bills but the cost of staying in Denver for many weeks.
We have two children, a sweet five year old son, Xander and a baby girl, Autumn that just turned 1. My loving mother will be joining us in Denver to help care for the children and me post surgery. In order for her to do this she will need to take a leave of absence from work, which also puts a big financial strain on her and my father.
We are hoping this surgery will finally allow me to heal and be well, so that I can care for my children the way a mother should. My son is so very helpful with his sister, but he gets sad because mommy can’t play with him, or take him to the park, or do the things I use to be able to do that many of us take for granted. I want him to remember me getting healthy and not being sick all the time. I wish that he won’t remember this horrible time and that we can make new memories of happy times.
As I right this with tears running down my face, I think back to all the hardships that I have had ever since they removed my cancer back on August 1st, 2014. I have had countless lung infections about 5 to 6 a year and with each one my lung gets damaged more and more. With this last one lasting so long, the severe damage it has caused will require part or all of my right lung to be removed. The stress that having this surgery is crazy, so not having to deal with stress from the financial burden would be a huge blessing.
