Ride Against Suicide

Over 44,000 Americans lose their lives to suicide every year, making it the tenth leading cause of death in the country. The latest data estimates that 12 million Americans seriously consider suicide, 3.5 million plan an attempt, and 1.4 million follow through with an attempt to kill themselves each year.

Every suicide is a preventable death, and we all can play a role in providing care and community for those struggling.

Accompanied by my uncle, I undertook this journey to generate awareness around the taboo subject of suicide as a means to help those struggling with their own suicidal thoughts, attempt survivors, or individuals who have lost a loved one(s) to suicide. From a fundraising perspective, all of the money raised will be donated to Integral Care in Austin, TX. These donations will assist Integral Care with their ongoing efforts to provide dedicated crisis care and mental health services to the most vulnerable demographics in Travis County.

The ride covers more than 4,200 miles during a 12-week span. This is a coast-to-coast journey that follows the TransAmerica Trail, beginning in Yorktown, Virginia, and concluding in Astoria, Oregon. Along the way, we’ll see the Blue Ridge Mountains, The Appalachian Trail, the Ozark Mountains, the Mississippi River, the Rockies, Yellowstone National Park, the Tetons, the hot springs of Idaho, the waters of the Atlantic, and the coastlines along the Pacific Northwest.

I’m of the belief that access to reliable mental healthcare before a crisis occurs is the best form of prevention. Again, every suicide is a preventable death, and in a country where 130 people take their own lives every day, it’s imperative that we all help one another. By supporting organizations that specialize in providing help for at-risk individuals and establishing uplifting communities, lives can be saved.

Fundraising will conclude on June 19th, 2021, at which point a total contribution will be made to Integral Care in memory of my Dad, Walter Michaud, who took his own life in 2016. It will be a birthday present in his name, as he would have turned 65 on 6/19/21.
