In the early hours of September 9th, my brother Dan was jolted awake by firefighters banging on his door, ordering him to evacuate immediately as flames engulfed the Jefferson Apartments in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. He fled wearing only his sleeping clothes, clutching his shoes, and watched a lifetime of belongings reduced to ash.

Dan is the kind of person who makes our community stronger simply by being in it. For most of his adult life, he's been a steadfast pillar of kindness in Squirrel Hill—donating blood almost 100 times (practically every time he's legally eligible), always ready with a friendly conversation for neighbors, and genuinely curious about everyone he meets.

The fire was merciless. A lifetime of memories, every piece of clothing, all his furniture—gone. Miraculously, firefighters rescued his two beloved pet lizards and recovered his phone and wallet, but that's all that remains of the home he's known for 18 years.

Today, Dan is asking the community for help to secure basic housing, replace essential items, and regain a sense of stability.
