Who we will support:
This is the story of Delmi, a courageous woman fighting for her life, crossing countries to escape domestic abuse and secure health care for her five year old son, Ernesto. This journey was possible through her partner and love, Miguel.
Delmi fled El Salvador with her young son, Ernesto and her partner Miguel (not their real names) to escape years of life-threatening violence Delmi suffered from her son’s father. Delmi and Miguel have credible fear they would be murdered if they return to El Salvador. Adding to their troubles is that little Ernesto is diabetic, and has struggled to get the medical care he needs to stabilize his condition.. Although Delmi and Ernesto have been bounced around, even homeless, they have blessedly kept together since they arrived in the U.S.
What is happening now:
Delmi has located extended family in the LA area, and even with limited resources, they rallied to help get them out of detention and housed. Sadly, Delmi’s partner Miguel, without whom she could never have been reunited with her son and made it to the U.S., was separated from them at the border and anxiously awaits his fate in Adelanto Immigration Detention Center. We have been working to secure legal representation for Delmi and Ernesto as well as Miguel as they move through the immigration and asylum process. Dealing with her child’s health problems and her own, plus the trauma of being apart from Miguel, Delmi has spent the last month consumed by bureaucracy, illness, fear, and the treatment she is subjected to because of her ever present ankle monitor.
What we seek to do:
The IKAR and Leo Baeck Temple communities have committed to help support this family as they seek reunification and asylum and work to rebuild lives of safety and opportunity here in the U.S.
As a people who has fled oppression and terror in many places and in many times across our history, we remember that we are commanded to love the immigrant, the stranger in our land, for we were once strangers in the land of Egypt. We don’t have to go back to the memory of Egypt to recall seeking safety in another land. To not fear for our lives. To seek a better future for our children.
We are delighted to be working together as two Jewish communities in Los Angeles. Already we have helped Delmi begin to stabilize her health, settle in to safe housing with an extended family member, and begin to find legal representation..
How we will do this - with money and our time:
We are raising this money to support Delmi and family in supplying basics (food, travel, clothing), medical expenses, legal support, and other emergent needs. The funds will be administered by a small team of dedicated and trusted IKAR and Leo Baeck Temple volunteer leaders. They will ensure that all funds are spent directly on the necessities listed above.
Your participation will make it possible for us to help this family recover from the trauma they have endured and to make them feel welcome in this country and in our city and communities.
Faith Communities Reuniting Families brought us this opportunity to act, to be generous, to dive through a headline and into someone’s life, supporting them in a moment of trauma and instability. Please join us.
