Hi, my name is Karen Hardwick.
I'm Tyler's Mom. Tyler was in a motorcycle accident on 1/20 @ 8:10am on his way to work. He hit a curb and was ejected from the motorcycle and was slammed into a utility pole. Thank God he was wearing a helmet and protective gear, otherwise he would not be alive. He was unresponsive at the scene of the accident and had to intubated, but was able to wake about 36 hours later.
He is currently still in the hospital with a TBI (traumatic brain injury) fractured shoulder blade, herniated disc's @ c6-7 and c1, and a bruised lung.
He's made some progress in the last week. To look at him on the outside you can barely tell he was in the accident just some scrapes and bruises. He's very confused and scared. Having some motor skill issues. He is able to communicate but loses train of thought and jumbles his words. Has difficulty staying in the here and now.
It will be a long hard road to recovery, and not sure that he'll ever fully recover.
Unfortunately Tyler does not have current medical insurance.
Found out today 1/29 that they denied rehabilitation therapy at the inpatient facility affiliated with the hospital.
He is going to need extensive cognitive and physical therapy. As well as 24/7 observation and care. Of course he is unable to work, so the bills are piling up. Our family is doing all we can to help but, unfortunately a decent facility that's specific for his type of injury comes at a cost. Average cost starts at about $1600 a day and length of stay could be a couple of weeks to several months and then outpatient. We just don't know. It's going take time.
The Dr is saying he thinks he's stable enough to be discharged within the next week. He was able to walk a few feet with assistance but is unsteady and loses his balance. While this is FANTASTIC news, he will be released to go home instead of to rehab. Of course he can't be on his own, he cannot take care of himself physically or mentally.
Here's MY dilemma.
He lives in Florida I live in TX. I've been here in Florida all week with him. I'm more than likely going to have to bring him back to TX with me when he's healthy enough to travel.
On that note, the funds raised will go directly to help with medical bills and therapy.
I know that was alot, and it's been ALOT!
Anything will help so much!
Thank you
If you pray to God or a higher power please pray for Tyler and our family.
