Aaron Hlushak and family expenses
Donation protected
A firefighter, friend and mentor to many, Aaron Hlushak, was an industrial firefighter for many years, then went on to provide training at Fire Etc (now Lakeland College) as an adjunct instructor. Aaron is undergoing a time limited battle with cancer. Aaron was diagnosed less than a year ago with an aggressive cancer which was affecting several organs. Sadly, due to the doctors not being able to pinpoint a primary cancer, Aaron is not eligible for benefits under Worker’s Compensation Board which are afforded to firefighters who have one of the listed cancers. Rules are rules, right?
However, what this means to Aaron and his family is that every penny of savings must be spent before any assistance can be provided through government agencies.
As of last week, January 14, Aaron received the news that the cancer has spread to his spine now. For anyone who has experienced a broken bone you’ll know how painful this is. Imagine that broken bone feeling all the time. Chemotherapy has been stopped as the cancer is too aggressive.
Aaron will need pain medications and considerable assistance for daily living until the cancer wins. But Aaron is a fighter and is the most amazing life mentor I have ever encountered, approaching and living this battle with humour and dignity. Please join me in helping Aaron continue this battle his way, to provide support for his needs and allow him to leave a legacy for his equally amazing wife, Lecia, his daughters and grandchild.
