On May 14th, my dear student, Rysha was involved in a serious car accident resulting in a torn aorta, multiple lacerations and a broken ankle. Rysha lost control of her car and hit a semi head-on. Rysha was transported to the University Hospital in Cincinnati where they were able to repair her aorta (but struggling with clotting). Since being admitted, Rysha has had to have other surgeries due to clotting in her vascular system. She has a long, extensive recovery ahead of her in the hospital.
Rysha is a graduating senior from Milford. This young lady is one of the nicest, funniest and most hard-working students we have ever had the privilege of teaching.
You see, Rysha is just more than my student. She is my 'kid.' I love her like she's my own. Rysha was an exemplary member of the Milford High School Colorguard. I've had the pleasure of being her coach for the last EIGHT years! Rysha is such a light and it radiates in every room she enters. She is positive, outgoing, caring, tenacious, takes initiative, helps others and she is the sweetest girl I know. My heart is breaking for her family as they are going through this difficult time.

This GoFundMe is an effort to help alleviate any financial burdens that her AMAZING mother, Julie, may endure as I am positive she will not be working so she can stay with her daughter in the hospital. Julie has been a GOD SEND for the Milford Colorguard Program. She is constantly pouring herself into the plethora of students and volunteering copious amounts of time to aide in the success of our colorguard. Rysha will remain in the hospital and is awaiting more surgeries to fix broken bones. If you feel it in your heart to donate, no amount is too small. If you cannot donate, please share. I am hoping my beloved marching band family and community can come together to help this talented, amazing and wonderful family. Thank you.
****I am so inspired by everyone's generosity in helping this amazing family****
I'd like to share a story about Rysha...
In the middle of this winterguard season (before the coronavirus), she tore her ACL at rehearsal. We were all devastated. This meant a major surgery for Rysha AND she would be unable to compete for the rest of the season due to the amount of recovery time needed for this particular surgery. BUUUUUUT, let me tell you...NOTHING stopped this ferocious girl. Rysha was determined to be back in the show before the end of the season regardless the part she played to end her senior season. She was WALKING independently (doctors approved) post surgery, and WAS IN THE SHOW again; although not in the capacity in which she had hoped for, she was able to perform the show in full costume once more before our season abruptly ended due to Covid-19. I was in awe of her then and I am amazed by her now. I know she is going to make a full recovery, I can feel the love surrounding her.

UPDATE: May 16, 2020
She has many injuries: a torn aorta they repaired with a stent. She has hyper coagulation so that has been a challenge to manage- and had to have a second surgery to remove clots in her leg immediately after the first one because she had no pulse in her right foot. She broke her right ankle severely and is going to need surgery to repair that- tentatively set for Monday despite her pleading to do it sooner. She also has 5 broken ribs, a chip off of one of her vertebrae, and lots of internal bruising and lots of cuts and scrapes- some very deep like on the back of her hand. There was a lot of glass imbedded in her hand and they didn’t get it all with a really deep clean and had to make an incision to go after it. They were able to retrieve the “earring back” sized piece of glass and did some stitching to try and aid the healing process. So much skin was missing they were not able to close it completely. But it will heal, and she will have her battle scars.
Rysha is alert and oriented and passed the cognitive test with flying colors except for the “what’s 15x6?” When she answered “I’m not gonna lie- I don’t know. I can’t figure that out in my head ;)”. She’s the same spitfire we all know and love. While she would love to chat with her friends and scroll Facebook, Instagram and tictoc- her energy is limited and she also has both hands restricted- her right with injuries and her left with a board because she has an arterial line and 2 IV’s. I’m sure once she is able you will see her active on those things. She also isn’t able to respond to all of the texts and messages she has received because of her limitations. But she is reading through things and is touched by all of the love she is receiving as am I.
Rysha has a good night last night, her blood pressure and heart rate are improving. She still needs some oxygen supplement when she is sleeping. They let her have clear liquids last night- and she had a couple bites of jello, half a bottle of apple juice and a big glass of ice water and then was “full”. They are letting her have a full diet today- and I’m sure she’s going to want Indian food since that’s where she was headed when she had her accident. But right now she doesn’t have an appetite. I will be on her to atleast drink today and will try to get some protein in her since her hemoglobin is low today. They are going to move most of the medications she is getting over to pill form once she is eating more and we hope that will give her some longer lasting pain control.
We are waiting for all of the docs to make their rounds to see if there is anything new. Our great nursing staff got her all cleaned up and washed her hair for her and that made her feel better.
I’ll update you later. Thanks by all of the love, support and generosity I am overwhelmed and humbled by it all. Julie
UPDATE MAY 17, 2020
Transfusion brought her numbers up a little. We will monitor that today and hope it continues to come up.
Just ordered her breakfast and hope I can get her to eat more than a bite or 2, but I’ll take what I can get.
They turned off her pain pump, but she hasn’t noticed:) they are giving her muscle relaxers which seem to help more anyway.
Plan is still to do ankle surgery tomorrow. The inside ankle bone (bump) broke off and spun around so she will need plates and screws to put it back together. They won’t know until they go in if there is also tendon/ ligament damage so giving us any kind of post surgery snapshot is not yet possible.
UPDATE MAY 18, 2020
Just got out of ankle surgery! All fixed!:) surgery went well, no ligament or tendon repair needed! They also cleaned out and stitched the puncture wound in her knee!
***Trauma team came in and evaluated her and said her AM HGB went down again and they are going to do a CT SCAN on her body to make sure all of her iternal bruising is stable.
CT Scan shows some problems. Her bruising in her abdominal wall has gotten bigger and she has something going on in her aorta near her heart. They're sending in cardio and vascular specialists in to evaluate.****
