Rylan's lymphedema journey.

Hello, my name is Brooke, and I am Rylan’s mum. I want to share Rylan’s story and ask for your support as we navigate a challenging journey.

During my pregnancy, everything seemed normal. At 38.3 weeks, I went for a growth scan, and all looked perfect. Just eight hours later, I was in labor, excited to welcome my son. When Rylan was born, my heart was filled with joy. However, that joy quickly turned to concern when the midwife noticed a significant swelling in Rylan’s arm. In that moment, my world felt like it had stopped.

After a brief shower, I learned that we needed to leave our small town of Narrabri for further medical attention. Within days, we were on a flight to Tamworth, and the reality of our situation began to unfold. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals were overwhelmed, and it took time to receive answers and treatment. We spent the next 13 months attending numerous appointments, undergoing genetic testing, and seeking answers, but clarity remained elusive.

When Rylan was 17 months old, we received a call to visit Sydney’s Westmead Children’s Hospital, where we spent three months undergoing extensive evaluations. We learned that Rylan has a serious condition affecting his lymphatic system, which does not function properly, leaving him with no immune system. He requires a complete blood count every month, making him susceptible to cancer, tumors, and blood clots.

To help manage Rylan’s condition, we urgently need a lymphatic pump machine. This device will massage his lymph nodes, aiding in fluid drainage and alleviating pressure in his face, arm, and leg. Unfortunately, due to the nature of his lymphatic issues, he cannot undergo physical drainage procedures.
