Ryland’s Recovery Journey
On March 10, the Hope family received a knock on the door in the middle of the night that is every parent’s worst nightmare. Two police officers were there to tell Dana and Andrew Hope that their son Ryland was in a serious car accident one block from home and had been rushed to hospital. Ryland sustained multiple skull fractures, severe head injuries, cracked sternum, damage to his right hand and a crushed right leg. He also had damage to his internal organs.
In a whirlwind of assessments and emergency surgeries Ryland was left in a coma and on life-support, fighting for his life, while his mom and dad and younger brother Parker were left waiting for a miracle. In mid April, the Hope’s got that miracle when Ryland woke up from the coma. Although he was still on life-support measures until just recently when he became strong enough to have his breathing and feeding tubes removed. Ryland’s journey is far from over but the family now has hope.
While Ryland was fighting for his life, Andrew took a fall and broke his hip. Andrew’s health has been strained for more than a year and he needed surgery to repair his hip. Due to complications, Andrew’s in-hospital recovery took much longer than anticipated and his mobility is now limited. Dana is currently a caregiver at home to Andrew and also a caregiver at the hospital with Ryland.
Ryland has a long journey ahead of him, he has a brain injury and very limited speech and mobility. However, there is so much hope! Ryland was strong enough to move to Riverview to participate in their rehabilitation program and is motivated to recover.
Dana is not able to return to work at this time and the family is facing many new expenses that are not covered through MPI or insurance: hospital parking, mobility equipment, communication equipment and likely modifications to their home when Ryland can come home.
Please consider helping the Hope family and Ryland on his recovery journey. Thank you!!
