Support Jared Through Unjust Termination

Jared Hutchins, a father of two beautiful boys, an educator committed to creating liberatory learning spaces for students and staff alike, and a fearless union organizer, was fired from his teaching job--effective immediately--at High Tech High North County on April 29, 2021.

This April, teachers at High Tech High, a group of charter schools in San Diego County, formed a union, the High Tech Education Collective. On April 29, most teachers received letters of intent confirming they would be rehired next year. On that same day, an article was published by SD News quoting Jared Hutchins, a respected four-year veteran of High Tech’s schools, as a member of our organizing committee. Later that day, Jared was fired. The reasons given were vague and subjective such as, “not supporting students,” and “having conflicts with colleagues.” We believe Jared was fired because of his union organizing efforts and his unapologetic and vocal commitment to antiracism, abolition, and liberation for all.

While the High Tech Educational Collective is taking legal action to fight this wrongful termination, we are also coming together as a community to support Jared during this incredibly unstable time. We are hoping to raise the $11,000 that Jared should have earned through the rest of his contracted salary to support him and his family through the rest of this academic year. We recognize that the emotional toll that this wrongful termination takes on Jared and his family is steep, and with your support, we can provide peace of mind that Jared’s housing, food, and childcare needs will be met.
