Ryder’s Stem Cell Treatments

RYDER’S STORY: This is a fundraiser to raise money for Ryder’s stem cell treatments! This is the cost of just 1 round of treatments out of the multiple needed for him. Thank you for helping us my an impact because this little boy means the world to our family. Due to lack of oxygen at birth, Ryder suffered an anoxic brain injury.  He was diagnosed with HIE (hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy) and later Spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy (all four limbs are affected).  He is spastic which means his muscles are extremely tight affecting his walking, balance, strength, hand/arm coordination and more. He will need to wear orthotics and use special equipment to help with everyday things such as sitting and standing.  Ryder will have to have physical & occupational therapy, as well as other therapies for the rest of his life. Ryder also suffers from seizures.  He started having them at 8 hours old.  At 24 hours old, Ryder was transferred from his birth hospital to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood FL.  This transfer was necessary because Ryder was not receiving the care he required. While at JDCH, the doctors we are able to get Ryder's seizures under control with medication.   Ryder remained in the NICU at JDCH for 28 days. Before he was discharged Ryder had many tests, including 2 MRI’s. The results of his MRI’s were not what we had hoped. Most of Ryder’s brain was severely damaged by the lack of oxygen.  We were given a pretty grim snapshot of what life would be like for Ryder. We were told the worst case scenarios and not given much hope. When we were finally home with Ryder we jumped right in to therapies and getting him the help he needed.  We have had amazing therapists for the last 5 years and Ryder has astounded us and his doctors with his attitude and determination proving his MRI results wrong! They told us everything Ryder would “not” do. He would “not” walk, he walks with a walker.  Ryder will “not” sit, he is sitting unassisted for short periods of time. If there is a way to do something, we will find a way for Ryder to do it!   Ryder started Kindergarten this year and has a fabulous support team in the school system.  Although Ryder has a global developmental delay, he is able to learn and communicate with switches.  We are going to be starting vision therapy soon, which will help with his diagnosis of Cortical Visual Impairment.  A majority of the gains seen after stemcell treatment have been with improved vision. This is one of the things we are hoping to see with Ryder. Stem Cell Treatments: Ryder has been accepted by the Stem Cell Institute of Panama for Stem Cell Treatments as they believe he is an ideal candidate because of his diagnosis and determination.  Stem cell treatments are known to stimulate and repair the damaged nervous tissue in both the brain and the spinal cord and repair the damaged tissue from a traumatic brain injury. It is most beneficial to get these treatments done when the brain is still developing so the younger you are the better! The clinic will use umbilical cord stem cells and Ryder will be given 4 intravenous infusions of umbilical cord tissue-derived allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells over the course of 5 days. This means there is a 0% chance of rejection because the body’s immune system is unable to recognize umbilical cord stem cells as foreign, so there’s 0% chance of complications or danger to Ryder! The Stem Cell Institute of Panama has administered thousands of stem cell treatments and not one case of rejection. The hope is that they will stimulate growth in the area of the brain that has been damages due to lack oxygen and help make Ryder’s daily activities easier for him!  This is by no means a cure but if there is a chance to make Ryder’s life easier for him, we have to take it! The cost of the first treatment needed is $15,825, this does not include travel (approx $1500).  However, accommodation for the 6 night stay are included! Ryder will need multiple treatments in order for him to get the most out of them. Unfortunately there are NO treatment facilities in the US  for cerebral palsy(other than clinical trials that Ryder was not chosen for) so we have to get the treatments elsewhere and that unfortunately is not covered by insurance. We have paid the deposit and have locked in the dates!  We are planning to travel to Panama the week of January 6th. We have set this page up to ask if anyone would like to help towards the cost of Ryder’s treatment. This is a genuine once in a life time opportunity for Ryder and combined with his therapies and his determination it could offer a new outlook on life. Any help towards the cost would be appreciated no matter how small, and it will help so much! Thank you for helping us my an impact because this little boy is so loved means the world to our family. Thank you,  Scott, Danielle, Ava & Ryder
