Ryan was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2 and was diagnosed at age 10 months when he failed to crawl, sit alone, or stand. SMA affects the muscles (much like ALS). The Respiratory System is also compromised and a common cold often ends in pneumonia and a hospital stay. SMA is the leading genetic cause of death among infants. It is degenerative and Ryan now has only minimal use of his hands.
