Downsize Ryan's Medical bill
Donation protected
Hi everyone,
My name is Gemma and I'm reaching out to you today to ask for your help for my dear friend, Casey, and her husband, Ryan.
Casey and I formed a lifelong friendship when she undertook a University Exchange in Australia in 2007.
Since then, I've had the pleasure of getting to know Ryan as well, visiting in Maui, hosting him in Australia and attending his and Casey's wedding in Lake Tahoe in 2016.
Ryan, who to me has always been a kind, funny, determined, accommodating soul recently had his health take a devastating turn.
He's been diagnosed with liver failure, and unfortunately, having wrapped up work temporarily in November, he does not have current health insurance.
In the state they reside in while debts incurred during the marriage are typically separate (meaning Casey wouldn't automatically be responsible for Ryan's pre-existing debt), there's a twist: The state has a "Family Expense Statute." This means medical bills are considered joint marital expenses, and creditors can come after both spouses for payment.
For those friends who live in the USA, you understand that medical bills are staggering, and the care required so far has included many nights in ICU and critical care. For friends living in Australia it is hard to comprehend that something like required care could have such a huge impact on someones financial future. In the USA without medical insurance, costs can quickly spiral out of control, leaving loved ones drowning in debt. Getting out of that financial hole can take years, and it can steal dreams and limit options for the future.
Casey is not only facing the unimaginable possibility of losing her husband but also is set to be left with a mountain of debt to face on her own.
The distance may separate us presently, me in Australia, Ryan and Casey in the USA, but this page is my way of showing my unwavering support for Casey and Ryan during this unthinkable time. By alleviating any financial burden, we can allow them to focus on Ryan's comfort and treatment.
Any contribution, big or small, will be put towards Ryan's care, and ensures Casey can continue to be by his side, without the urgency to return to work. Seeing them face such a tremendous challenge from afar is incredibly difficult.
Please consider donating what you can to help Ryan get the treatment he needs. Funds raised will go directly towards Ryan's medical expenses to ensure his treatment and comfort remain at the highest standard.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
In gratitude,
Gemma
