Hello, my name is Ryan and I will be receiving my Associate’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Technology at the conclusion of this semester--while pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management at SUNY Cobleskill.
As part of the curriculum, the Wildlife Management department is offering me—along with other students majoring in the field—the opportunity to go to South Africa—to see first-hand and experience some of things we have learned in the classroom.
Naturally, I am very excited about this opportunity, but unfortunately, I am unable to cover the cost of the trip without financial assistance. Below are the costs associated with the trip and hope that with your support, I will be able to make it to South Africa.
While in South Africa, I will have the opportunity to interact with wildlife rangers, veterinarians and researchers at various rehabilitation centers, national parks and nature reserves. We will cover topics including, but not limited to care and relocation of wildlife, wildlife management techniques, ecosystems and biodiversity conservation, reserve and resort management, diseases, and rehabilitation, maximization of tourist experience and minimizing environmental impact and breeding of rare species.
I always get asked “Why wildlife management? Aren’t you from the city? So you’re going to be a vet?” I’ve had a passion for wildlife from an early age. Initially, I wanted to study marine biology but my fascination with sharks grew to an overall fascination with all animals (thanks to the Discovery Channel). With the knowledge that I have obtained thus far in my college career, I am convinced that I am on the right path. My ultimate goal as a wildlife biologist and manager is to have my own wildlife refuge, and I am confident that taking this trip and getting this hands-on experience will undoubtedly broaden my knowledge of the field and pave a successful path to my career.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story; I appreciate any help you can offer.
