My name is Carinta. I only just met Ryan 2 days ago, but I want to help him and I know that everyone who knows him and his story is going to want to help too.
Ryan is an 8 year old boy, and now 5 years after his original diagnosis, he is facing a recent relapse of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Ryan has so many blessings to be thankful for. First, he and his family walk in faith and they know that they are not walking alone. Second, he has his parents and his two older brothers by his side. Third, he is being treated at SickKids hospital by the best doctors in the field. Even with all of these blessings, there are things that we can do to help.
Ryan will spend the next 3-6 months at SickKids enduring the hard part of this journey. His first diagnosis was treated with Chemotherapy. His current treatment plan includes Chemotherapy and a Bone Marrow Transplant. This journey will be much harder than his first, and the chances that he will face complications are much higher than his first treatment journey.
Ryan needs his family to be able to fight along-side him. He needs to see and feel their presence. He needs to pull from their strength when his own body is too weak to do it alone. We can help this happen by donating to this go-fund-me. Our Canadian social safety net will provide some reprieve so that Ryan's father can step away from work to support Ryan in his fight - but the decrease in pay, coupled with the increased expenses during this time, makes it impossible for Ryan's dad to step away from work. We can rally around Ryan to bridge the gap between what Ryan's family needs and what they have, so that both of Ryan's parents and Ryan's brothers can be with them during this uphill battle.
My daughter also faced a cancer diagnosis at 3 years old. She too relapsed at 8 years old. The second time around is much tougher than the original diagnosis, and as a family, we needed to be together for my daughter and for each other. Let's support Ryan and his family so that they can be together during this time.
