Ryan Mathew Lutz passed away suddenly on December 31, 2025, at just 47 years old.

He was one of the funniest, most exuberant people you could ever meet. Ryan had a gift for telling stories that left you in tears of laughter—never at anyone’s expense, always with warmth and heart.

Raised in Ohio in a family that never fully understood him, Ryan attended several colleges before graduating from Portland State University. It was in Portland that he truly found his stride, his purpose, and his chosen family within the queer and alternative communities that he loved so deeply.

Ryan devoted his professional life to serving marginalized and underserved people, including those living with HIV, those affected by cancer, and Indigenous communities.

Ryan’s family of choice meant everything to him. With no will in place, we are now working together to honor him with a respectful memorial and the interment of his ashes. We greatfully welcome any help in funding his memorial and final arrangements.

A Celebration of Life for Ryan will be held on February 7 at 4:00 p.m. at Honeybeez, 1434 Southwest Oak Avenue, Portland, OR 97291.
