UPDATE from Ryan:
Late night check in from Duke medical Center. This is Ryan, just wanted to give an update and send some love to everyone, and a warning. I had an awake craniotomy for a brain tumor, as you obviously know. (Nothing like being conscience and having a surgeon digging around in your brain, and then hearing the drill and feeling the pressure of them buttoning your head back up....0/10 would not recommend.) I had a great surgeon- Dr. Allan Friedman, had to be fairly aggressive to resect as much tumor as possible, so I do have some left sided weakness, due to the tumors margins lying near the motor sensory strip. I’ve dealt with this before after a bad motorcycle wreck in 2013. Muscle fibers are switching back on now in my left side, and Dr. Freidman thinks I’ll be back to normal in 7-10 days, just like that wreck, this is another scar to wear, another bump in the road, another chapter, but hopefully not the last. I’ve still got to sail the world! Finally, don’t let my story become your story. Four weeks ago I was applying to Harvard, three weeks ago I was awoken from sleep to a grand mal seizure, and sat down in a tiny room at MUSC alone and told, “I’m so sorry, but you have a tumor the size of an orange in your frontal lobe. This has truly been a liberating experience, as I feel that I am totally free, and can turn a new page, (even if it’s the start of the final chapter, and have a reason to live life to the fullest. Find that reason for yourself, and don’t let it be something as intense as a brain tumor/ cancer. I am overwhelmed by the amount of donations, messages, and calls. It means a lot. It’s very humbling. I’ve never felt so much love. I’m sorry about not responding to some of you in a timely fashion, I’ve had a lot on my mind(literally). Thanks to Angela Todd for putting this on, and those that shared, and Robyn Morrissey for going an extra mile for me. Lastly, thank you to all those that donated. Please drop a comment or on my Facebook, those are better than donations, and are nice to read! Jai guru deva om.
Hi everyone, So if you haven't heard on Monday October 26th, Ryan Hinton went to the ER in Charleston because he had a seizure a few nights earlier. He waited a few days because he didn't think too much of it, however, after being released from the ER the doctors called him back because they found something unusual on his CAT scan. He went back for an MRI later that afternoon and found out that his seizure was due to an Oligodendroglioma in his brain. They believe that it is around the size of a clementine and that it may have been slowly growing for up to ten years. Ryan came back to Nashville right away to meet with Doctors at Duke and St. Thomas to discuss the next steps. Ryan's surgery was with Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC on Friday the 20th of November to remove the tumor for a biopsy to determine the types of cells and his cancer's aggressiveness. Ryan is out of surgery and the Doctors said that it is a primary brain tumor and it's low grade. It is being sent off for a biopsy to determine the type of cancer and the exact treatment he will need, but we do know that chemotherapy and radiation are most likely the additional treatment. The recovery will be six weeks long and a difficult process. Ryan lost some function on his left side during surgery, but the doctors are confident that he will regain it back over time. He will spend time at Duke with his parents and although he is fortunate enough to have insurance to help cover his treatment, it is a very costly procedure and he and his family will have to be away from home. Keeping Ryan in your thoughts and prayers is more than enough, but if you are able to help, your support though donation would be so wonderful. I'm sure Ryan would love to read all of your messages as well so feel free to leave a note! We are hoping for the best possible outcome from all of this and will know more in the next coming weeks. Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and love!
