Ryan Boggs- Root Canal to the ICU
Ryan Boggs was admited to the ER at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago on December 8, 2018 for complications associated with an abscessed tooth following two root canals earlier in the week. He had surgery to lavage the abscess and have drains placed as well as the institution of IV antibiotics. Two days later an infectious disease team became involved due to the progression of facial and neck swelling. With a change in antibiotic regimen, an initial decrease in his white cell count was promising! However, he remained uncomfortable with increasing edema of his head and neck that evening. Following a CT scan he went into respiratory arrest due to an occluded airway and briefly coded! Thank goodness his wife Kristin was by his side and recessition happened promptly!!! Several life saving measures were performed including an emergency tracheal intubation, and ecmo (heart/lung machine). He was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was heavily sedated and remained on life support measures and administered 2 aggressive antibiotics to get the highly drug resistant infection under control. Ryan had severe head, neck and chest edema and was barely recognizable as the young man who ran in the Chicago marathon just two months ago.
About 48 hours later the medical team began to slowly wean him from some life support measures and monitor his response. He responded in true Ryan fashion- with determination! Each day he is stronger, more alert, and more recognizable as the man we know and love.
Ryan’s youth, good health, and strength, as well as the support of friends and family are aiding him in his amazing recovery. However he still has a long and, at this point, somewhat unknown road to recovery. As you can imagine (and we pray you never have to know), a long term, life saving ICU stay generates substatial medical bills, even with insurance, and absence from work for not only the patient but also his spouse. We’ve been inundated with questions from friends and family asking how they can help. We can help them put a small dent in the medical bills they have coming, thus alleviating part of their stress. This would be a tremendous way to make an impact on Ryan’s recovery.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping Ryan and Kristin in so many ways- financially, emotionally and spiritually!! Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers, it's helping!!
Love and best wishes,
Ryan and Kristin’s family
