We all pray that the day will never come that you need to ask for help, but that day did indeed come for the Coakes family.
On Saturday January 7th, 2017, Rick Coakes was taken to Legacy Mt. Hood Hospital with "flu like" symptoms. He deterioriate quickly to the point that he needed to be placed on a ventilator. It was quickly determined that he was so sick that he required transport to Legacy Emanuel - the regions premier Respiratory Failure Referral Center. Ironically, this is where Rick's wife Joy works as a Registered Respiratory Therapist.
Rick's transport to Legacy Emanuel went well and he was placed in the NTICU on a specialty ventilator to help oxygenate and protect his lungs. Unfortunately, even this was not enough to stabilize Rick and he required a specialty form of life support called ECMO.
Rick is a wonderful man who before the 7th of January was healthy and active. He runs 6 miles a day, 3 days each week to keep himself in shape.
Rick initially trained and worked as an accountant. After several years, he wanted to do more for his community, so he became a Volunteer Reserve Police Officer for the Portland Police Department. He truly loves his new "job" and hopes that he can do it full time in the future.
Rick also volunteers two to three days a week at his church. He absolutely loves spending time with his wife and their 2 dogs Gus and Emma.
This account was set up out of the multiple requests to donate funds to the family. The funding will help Joy (who is the main income earner) with the many expenses that may not be covered with his very long hospital course and future rehabilitation.
Rick and Joy have been married for 21 years. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers that they will have the opportunity for many more years together.
