Wife, Sister, Aunt and Mother - My Mom is all these things and so much more. In 1990, fresh out of high school my mother’s life at the young age of 18 she was diagnosed with hodgkin's lymphoma stage 2. She went through with an experimental protocol treatment that she received in Houston, Texas for 6 months where she was finally diagnosed cancer free.
Years later on to follow in March of 2006, my Mom was brought home after she fainted at her eldest child’s school. She was brought home by a fellow teacher, and met with her now husband Chris Kowalski. Out of nowhere she collapsed where her husband began CPR when he realized she was not breathing. After calling 911, paramedics revived her after her heart had stopped for a few minutes. She had suffered a massive heart attack that led her into a coma for nearly a week and another month into different care faculties. During this time my mom and Chris received a call from the Doctors In Houston, Texas worrying that because of the experimental treatment she went through as a teenager, other patients and herself were experiencing heart attacks. The very few minutes her heart stopped beating gave her a long hard road of recovery and obtained an excessive amount of brain damage that left her disabled.
This past winter she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. After months of an assortment of cat scans, pet scans and mammograms the doctors decided it would be best for her to start chemotherapy to see how her tumor in her chest would react to it in hopes of understanding what their next approach would be. Since triple negative breast cancer is much more aggressive, we are understandably concerned, especially during these times.
While our story is not unique. My mother is a fighter, she continues to fight day and night but the overwhelming amount of bills on top of her treatment is only bringing our family more stress. Not to mention, both of her children are going to college this fall.
If you are able, please help lessen our worry by contributing a small amount to her GoFundME page to help pay for her Medicare out-of-pocket costs for this year. Cancer treatment is extraordinarily expensive, as just a neulasta after chemo patch has a 1,100 dollar copay.
I will provide updates on her status via this page on a regular basis. If we are lucky enough to exceed the dollars needed to pay her bills, the balance will be used for her 2021 Medicare out-of-pocket.
We thank our friends and family that have been giving us constant love and support throughout this rough time.
