Lebanon, once known as the ‘Switzerland of the Middle East,’ is now experiencing what the World Bank has described as one of the worst financial collapses since the 1800s.
Since 2019, the Lebanese pound has lost more than 90 of its value. The minimum wage has not changed, but hyperinflation, as a result of the Lebanese pound crashing, has pushed food prices up by 400%. Drugs and medicine, which are subsidized by the government, are running out. There is a nationwide fuel shortage, resulting in hours of lines to obtain only a few gallons of gas. There are massive electricity shortages, and even those with private generators cannot get fuel to run them - leading most people to survive on only a few hours of electricity a day. This crisis effects everyones in Lebanon, not just the Lebanese; Lebanon hosts the highest number of Syrian refugees (per capita of residents) in the world, with more than 1 million Syrian refugees and over 270,000 Palestinian refugees. Very basic needs are not being met and the situation is dire. There has been little international support, and the Lebanese government has failed its people.
If you are able, please consider donating - a little goes a long way. Money from the fundraiser will go to the following reputable organizations:
- Beit El Baraka (medicine and food distribution): https://beitelbaraka.org/forsa/
- Baytna Baytak: (medicine and food distribution): https://baytnabaytak.com
- Chance Association (pediatric cancer patients) : https://chanceassociation.org/about-us/
- Lebanon Relief Fund (shipment of medication): https://www.lebanonreliefproject.com
My family in Lebanon is suffering, the county is suffering, and the people of Lebanon deserve some relief after what has been an incredibly difficult existence for most. Anything helps and is greatly appreciated- thank you so much!
