Summer Program to Complete Degree
My life has always been defined by my athletic ability. Sports allowed for me to have social interactions, while simultaneously letting me remain very introverted. The safety net of my teammates was always there for me, never forcing further social growth and development. In the first two years of college, I was able to participate on multiple sports teams, allowing myself to be part of “college athletics” social group until I suffered back-to-back concussions that brought my total number of concussions to seven. My neurologist refused to give me clearance to engage in any more collegiate-level sports, and I instantly lost my social outlet.
As I completed my degree in Forensic Psychology, I’ve watched friends do “study abroad” programs, return from their adventures not only with mementos and great stories, but having gone through a complete character metamorphosis and blossomed significantly. Their increase in confidence has usually been accompanied by the making of some new close-knit friends – people who shared their adventure and with whom they studied. Now, a senior in college, I’ve been encouraged by my academic advisors to take a risk and seize the opportunity to study in London this summer.
I applied and was accepted to the State University of New York at Brockport’s Summer Session in Westminster. Upon my return from this six-week program I will have completed all my credits and courses needed to complete my degree. In addition, Westminster provides a course which allows students to study the pathology of one of the most infamous serial killers in history, Jack the Ripper.
As the second of four children of divorced parents to go through college, resources are tight. I’ve been augmenting my own tuition and other expenses through working as a restaurant server and as junior high lacrosse coach, but I still find myself $10,000 short of what I need for the full travel, tuition, and room and board to do this dream semester in Westminster. I’d so appreciate your help!
