Mabel's New Eyes; Blind Rescue Dog
Donation protected
When Damon and I adopted Mabel 2 months ago, we were simply looking for breakfast but as fate would have it we parked in front of an open pet adoption. As we walked by the dogs that were barking and excited, there was one that stood out because she was alone in a seperate kennel, not making a peep. She was known then as "Cinnamon". An hour after holding her and realizing she was completely blind with severe cataracts, my heart melted and 3 days later she came home with us.
Mabel had been in a shelter for 14 months and her previous owners wanted her euthanized because of her blindness :(
Mabel has had a long road to good health and it seems she can't catch a break. We were initially told she was just 4 years old and her cataracts were "new". As soon as we took her to the vet, we realized she was more like 8, had a horrible case of fleas, tape worm and was a bit skinny, too. Not to mention, her teeth were completely rotted and she has to get numerous extractions.
We didn't care. We loved her.
Never had we met such a sweet, calm dog. She literally does not bark, never leaves your side and wants nothing but love. What she gives us is more than we could ever hope to give her.
Until now...
We took Mabel to a dog optometrist this weekend to be sure there wasn't more to her cataracts than meets the eye (pun!). Turns out, there's lots...
Mabel's right eye has a severe case of glaucoma and pressure. For example, a healthy dogs eye pressure ranks from 10-25. Mabel's right eye is at 47! To put this in human terms, she walks around all day with a constant migraine. We would never know Mabel has been in such long suffering pain because she's so calm, sweet and well behaved. But this behavior is symptematic of how she has learned to cope with the discomfort she feels 24/7. The only way to alleviate this pain is to remove her right eye. This surgery costs $2,231. Sadly, we simply cannot afford this. In the interim, we have her on an antibiotic to hopefully ease some of the pressure but none of this is a permanent fix.
Now onto her left eye...
This eye fortunately is testing at normal levels of pressure BUT is completely blind. The silver lining is that it still responds to light, which means we can test this eye and see if it's a good candidate for cataract surgery which would GIVE MABEL SIGHT BACK. However, the test to even see if she's a candidate is $989. And if by grace she turns out to be a good candidate, that surgery is $3,721.
We are not fundraising for the cataract correction surgery because there's a significant chance she won't be elligible. But we are fundraising to ease her pain by having the right eye removed and for the test to see if she qualifies for the correction surgery on the left eye.
Rescuing a dog is such a blessing but unfortunately we could use some help to make Mabel have a painless life and potentially see just how much we love her - literally!
We will have a party for her before she goes into surgery for all local donors!
We appreciate the time you have taken to read this and hope you'll consider giving Mabel the life she deserves.
