Childhood Cancer - not something any parent wants to believe could happen to them, but for Makayla and Anthony Gomez their nightmare became a reality. Transitioning from baby food to real food is a struggle for some children. And most parents know the tummy upset that it can bring. Baby Sophia began eating more "real" food, so when her tummy felt hard her mom, Makayla, thought what most of us would - that she is probably constipated from all the new food. However it didn't feel right so Makayla took her to the doctor just to make sure. Then, the nightmare began. It was suspected, then later confirmed through surgical biopsies, that Sophia has Intermediate Risk Neuroblastoma. The cancer is in her liver, lungs and bone marrow. She had a line put in during surgery to administered chemo through, and she has since been given her first round of chemo with treatment that is scheduled for the next 8 months. Sophia's father Anthony is a service member in the United States Army. He was flown home from Korea when he got the news. However, he will be returning and Makayla will be responsible for her care while he is deployed. Texas Children's Hospital is wonderful, but you can't ignore the cost of just getting there, parking and meal costs in the medical center. In addition there are so many unforeseen expenses that inevitably will arise. Let's all come together and help this family. Sophia's dad is serving our country.
